It’s former Heavyweight Champion of the World Mike Tyson’s turn to take on a shark in this year’s socially distanced version of Shark Week.
In Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef, Tyson will encounter a Great White shark while underwater and encased in a shark cage. While it’s unlikely that any sort of recognizable boxing match will ensue, the whole event will be called by legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer.
“[T]hese two heavyweights will square off underwater, where Mike Tyson will try to score a TKO over the massive shark … all in the name of research,” Discovery said in a statement. How exactly the two will square off is as of yet unknown, as is how this human-fish meet-up will contribute to science.
For Tyson, the event is about overcoming what many would see as a very realistic fear of giant sharks.
“I equate this with overcoming my fear of getting back into the ring at 54 years old,” Tyson said, also in a statement. “I learned from this experience doing Shark Week that whatever intimidates me, I am still able to step up to the challenge of overcoming anything that would prevent me from accomplishing my life’s mission of reaching my highest potential in life and bringing me closer to God.”
Discovery’s Shark Week, including Rumble on the Reef, kicks off Sunday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. ET and runs through Sunday, Aug. 16.
