When MTV News and The Smithsonian Channel partnered on five-part digital series Meaning in Music, an exploration of the history and cultural significance of hip-hop, the collaborators came to Brooklyn-based And/Or for series’ titles, branding and graphics.
To create a modern but nostalgic package, And/Or took inspiration from iconic poster and album art to create overlays and overprints of typography, archival imagery and graphic collages, showcasing the intersection between artists, genres, and songs for elements such as timelines, audio recordings and lyrics.
“Our goal was to combine the flavor of MTV News with the historic gravity of The Smithsonian,” said And/Or Creative Director Kelli Miller in a statement. “We took inspiration from iconic poster and album art to create overlays and overprints of typography, archival imagery, and graphic collages, showcasing the intersection between artists, genres, and songs for elements like timelines, audio recordings, and lyrics. The final result was a robust package of graphic elements that mixed the past and the present in content and design.”
